Symposiums and Workshops

Each year, the GCC organizes a Symposium or a Workshop to focus on a particular, pressing challenge facing grasslands and land-use managers across British Columbia. The event is held at a different venue each year to enable "grasslanders" from the various regions of the province to attend these solution-oriented forums.

June 2007

The 2007 Symposium will be held on June 7 and 8, 2007, in Kelowna, BC. The symposium will be held in conjunction with the Annual General Meeting for the GCC, which is scheduled for June 9, 2007. Its focus will be on fragmentation and development and it will feature Mike Harcourt as the keynote speaker as well as panels, discussions and session covering a variety of different aspects that relate to the topic.

June 2006

The 2006 Sustaining Healthy Grasslands Workshop: The Principles and Techniques of Grassland Restoration was held in Grand Forks, BC on June 17, 2006.  The workshop was educational and informative with a focus on management and restoration of grassland ecosystems following disturbance by such events as fire, invasive plant species and intensive grazing by cattle and wildlife. June 2005

The 2005 Sustaining Healthy Grasslands Symposium was held in Kamloops, BC on June 17, 2005.  The goal of the symposium was to enable a common understanding of grasslands-based mountain biking, grassland stewardship and the future of sustainable grasslands recreation in British Columbia.  For more information on the symposium, please visit the symposium website, here.

June 2004

In lieu of a symposium, the GCC hosted a field tour in conjunction with the Annual General Meeting on June 20, 2005.  The tour was held in the pristine grasslands of Douglas Lake Ranch and attendees enjoyed a discussion with Douglas Lake Ranch manager Joe Gardner, as well as presentations on local history, grassland wildlife and plant ecology.

June 2003

In June 2003 the GCC hosted a Healthy Grasslands Workshop at Big Bar Ranch in the Cariboo Chilcotin.  The workshop brought together a wide range of grassland enthusiasts eager to learn more about grassland healthy and working grasslands.  The workshop included representatives from the ranching community, First Nations, government and conservation organizations.  Full proceedings and other information from the workshop can be found here.

June 2002

The focus of the June 2002 Sustaining Healthy Grasslands Symposium, held in Cranbrook, BC, was Species and Spaces at Risk. It focused on the challenges facing land-use managers in this new era of results-based government resource management as well as the ecology of grassland species. Full proceedings and other information from the workshop can be found here.
