What is the GCC?
The Grasslands Conservation Council of BC is a charitable organization that works to protect one of Canada's most precious eco-systems--the grasslands of British Columbia. Our programs range from mapping and GIS analysis of the grasslands, to green development and planning in grassland communities, to stewardship and monitoring initiatives in the ranching and agricultural industry. We work with government, First Nations, ranchers, builders, other non-profit groups and a variety of other stakeholders to ensure that the grasslands of BC remain intact.
Grasslands are found on every continent in the world, except for Antarctica. In North America, the grasslands occupy the middle of the continent east of the Rocky Mountains and extend from central Alberta, Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba where they merge with the Desert Plains Grasslands and the Coastal Prairie along the Gulf of Mexico.
British Columbia has the largest intact virgin grasslands in Canada. They cover about 0.74 million hectares (less than one percent) of the province. There are eight distinct grassland regions in BC:
Our office is based in Kamloops, which is located in the Thompson-Pavilion grasslands. Our projects extend to each grassland region, however, and we have board members, partners and funders from each of the eight grassland regions.
